Christopher D. Campbell, Ph.D.
Dean, Academic Affairs and Operations
South University, Richmond, Virginia
Christopher D. Campbell is the Dean of Academic Affairs and Operations at South University’s newest campus in Richmond, Virginia. South University is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to grant Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees in a variety of fields. Before assuming his current position, he spent a year as a visiting faculty member at the Citadel in Charleston, SC, and a brief time consulting a number of government agencies on writing and speaking.
Chris graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1981, and soon thereafter set out to win the Cold War, logging more than 2000 flying hours as a proud member of the Strategic Air Command. With that mission accomplished, he spent the remainder of a 27-year career bouncing from graduate school, to the faculty at the Air Force Academy, to liaison positions with the Marines and the Army. In his final tour at the Academy, he was the Deputy Head of the English Department and then the Deputy Inspector General. Billing himself as “more Indiana Jones than Harold Bloom,” Chris spent six years as Attached Staff for The Wings of Blue, and feeds his surviving adrenaline addiction as a current member of the Special Forces Association Parachute Demonstration Team and as a skydiving instructor.
He brings a wealth of recent experience from both sides of the job search. After spending much of his year at the Citadel deciding what he really wanted to be when he grew up, his first task as a Dean was to staff a new campus with a Registrar, Librarian, Program Directors and faculty in almost every discipline. He claims that coordinating airlift from a warzone is less challenging.
