MICHAEL B. PERINI

Mr. Michael B. Perini is the Executive Director of the National Institute of Science, Space and Security Centers (NISSSC) at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. The Institute’s vision is to make a difference in strengthening the global competitiveness of the U.S. through research programs in science, space and security.
In addition to advising and supporting the UCCS Chancellor in research and curriculum development, Mr. Perini directs the activities of four nationally recognized centers: Center for Homeland Security (CHS), Center for Space Studies (CSS), Center for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education (CSTEME), and the Trauma, Health & Hazards Center (THHC).
Mr. Perini served more than 36 years in the Air Force, in both civilian and military positions. He is a retired Colonel. Prior to his current position, he was director of public affairs at NORAD and U.S. NORTHERN COMMAND. He has served in senior positions in public affairs at Air Force Space Command and U.S. SPACE COMMAND. Mr. Perini began his military career in air traffic control, serving at Sheppard AFB, Texas, and Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai AFB, Thailand. In 1978, Mr. Perini was selected for career broadening into the public affairs career field. He served as public affairs officer at the wing, major command and Air Force levels. He also served a year on the editorial staff of Air Force Magazine in Washington, D.C., and is the former editor and publisher of Airman Magazine at Kelly AFB, Texas. Mr. Perini was the first U.S. military officer journalist to visit the Soviet Union and holds an "ABC" accreditation from the International Association of Business Communicators. During 2005, he led the largest U.S. military public affairs operation in the U.S. during Hurricane Katrina. Recent professional development has included the 2003, ’04 and ’05 National Homeland Defense Foundation Symposiums; 2006 USNORTHCOM Dynamics of Militant Extremism; 2006 Avian Influenza Pandemic Table Top Exercise.
